"As I say goodbye, I take a piece of China with me. So, it will always be with me." As his China trip drew to a close, retired U.S. teacher Ronald Sakolsky made the heartfelt statement in an interview with Media Unlocked.
Speaking about his story with Yin Yuzhen, Sakolsky repeatedly emphasized: "She's the hero." He had told her that growing trees in the desert was impossible, but she proved him wrong. "No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted." He described his own contribution as a small act of kindness and hoped that media coverage would spread his message: We must plant more trees, and build relationships.
Sakolsky returned to China with only one wish: to see his former students again. But the encounters he had over his 10-day journey brought far more than he could ever have expected. In Luoyang, Henan province, he reunited with his former students. The children he once taught have grown into pillars of society. They told him that he had helped shape who they are today. Reflecting on that enduring connection, Sakolsky said: "My Chinese students remember me. That's what teaching is."
"Come to China with an open mind, not with expectations, and get over the fear," Sakolsky said. He noted that many U.S. citizens assume the rest of the world lives as they do. "Chinese people do it the Chinese way. Learn about the different ways, take a little from each, and the world would be a better place," he said, urging young Americans to see China for themselves.
"My generation is the present and the past. Young people are the world's future." Sakolsky hopes he has planted a seed among the younger generation and that support from governments and relevant organizations will help this seed take root and grow.
